I first joined SAVTE as a volunteer 1:1 tutor in 2002. My first learner was Samira who came from Yemen, I’m still friends with her and her family and went to her daughter’s wedding recently.
In 2007 a post as Outreach and Development Worker became available at SAVTE. I applied and was successful.
It was originally just for 6 months but here I am 11 years later!
What I particularly like about SAVTE is that we really work to make our learners independent. I enjoy reading learners testimonies where they no longer need interpreters or help with the daily routines of life.
Over these years the most rewarding project that I worked on was developing the Conversation Group on the Winn Gardens estate.
We identified and trained a group of local residents to deliver the conversation group to newly arrived refugees who had been recently housed there. It was a great success and an example of real community cohesion.
As for myself, I enjoy gardening, Middle Eastern food and meeting wonderful new people from all over the world, hearing their stories and making new friends!
