My career for 30 years was in librarianship and much of that was spent with Sheffield Libraries.
I learnt the value of free public services where people who came to this city could study and have access to information which would enable them to get jobs and change their lives.
In 2002 I moved into Adult Education at Sheffield College, supporting learners whose second language was English.
SAVTE has given me the opportunity to continue to use the skills and experience I gained in the public sector
From there it was a step up to teaching ESOL to adults who were looking to start a career. From 2004 – 2007 I was a city councillor in a deprived ward and saw at first hand the enormous contribution which the voluntary sector makes to the lives of people who come to Sheffield to settle and work.
SAVTE has given me the opportunity to continue to use the skills and experience I gained in the public sector and I’m fortunate enough to have run 4 conversation clubs over my 4 years with this wonderful organisation.
Being a trustee and working with the staff here to develop SAVTE’s work is a responsibility I’m very happy to take on.
