I first joined SAVTE in 2013 as a sessional ESOL tutor – I spent a fantastic few years teaching several different classes of learners at different levels in various community venues. Learning to speak, read and write a new language as an adult is very hard work – especially when you may only have limited time to give to the process of learning and, may have had a very different experience of education as a child.

My experience working at SAVTE as a tutor, a Link Worker and later as the Programmes Director has left me with a lasting admiration for the learners, volunteers and the staff team. I was keen to stay connected with SAVTE after I left in 2023 and becoming a Trustee was the logical step

I get to continue to be part of the transformative impact that people involved with SAVTE make happen, in addition I have been able to develop my skills in Charity governance with the support of the co-chairs and fellow trustees. Professionally I have been able to bring some insights from my wider work South Yorkshire, and being a Trustee enables me to stay connected with the charity sector in Sheffield.
