As a SAVTE Volunteer, you’ll get all the training, resources and support you need to teach someone in Sheffield to speak English. You will visit your learner’s home, once a week, to spend about an hour tutoring them in the English they need for everyday life in the UK, starting with the basics. Training with us is friendly, informative and accessible.

Language Volunteers support people to learn and practice English 1:1 usually in their home or community settings. This role involves a few hours each week to prepare, travel, and support a learner for at least 6 months. Language volunteers either are placed with beginners or those who are progressing with learning.

For our 1 to 1 Language Support Programme we are looking specifically for female volunteers as we have a large waiting list for female learners. We currently have a sufficient number of trained male volunteers and are not currently recruiting male volunteers for this programme. However, you may also be interested in becoming a Conversation Group Volunteer at SAVTE, please have a look at the information for this role. Alternatively, you could contact Sheffield Volunteer Centre who can provide information on alternative volunteering roles in the city.

The language support you provide can be transformative and empowering, enabling your learner to connect with their local community, build confidence and access the culture, services and opportunities that Sheffield has to offer. No previous teaching experience is needed. Once you’ve signed up at savte.org.uk/info we will get in touch to learn more about you and book your training, which will take place on one morning a week for 6 weeks Your link worker will support you and your learner to develop goals and progress, throughout your placement. With the teaching resources we provide, tailored to individual needs, most learners achieve their goals within a year!

“Just wanted to say thank you for the training course…I found it so well paced and really inclusive. I’ve been retired for some time and wasn’t sure how I would cope but thoroughly enjoyed it. Can’t beat being with good people.” -Trevor, 2023 volunteer
